Update on Title IX Regulations

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance. The United States Department of Education is responsible for implementing regulations that effectuate Title IX’s prohibition on sex discrimination. Although new Title IX regulations went into effect in August 2024, these regulations were never implemented at Cornell due to legal challenges. As detailed by the United States Department of Education, on January 9, 2025, a federal district court issued a decision vacating the 2024 Final Rule. Consistent with the court’s order, the 2024 Title IX regulations and these resources are not effective in any jurisdiction.  As a result, Cornell University continues to utilize and comply with the Title IX regulations that went into effect on August 14, 2020.
